The Desertec Initiative - Renewable Energy projects
Desertec Initiative
Solar power is one the sources of renewable energy that it has been argued, could power the entire world. The Desertec Initiative is aiming slightly smaller, by constructing the world’s biggest solar farm in the Sahara Desert in order to potentially power North Africa and most of Europe.
While this would be a massive achievement, the initiative is starting with modest goals and is hoping to supplythe continent with 15 percent of its energy by 2015.
The project would see photovoltaic panels constructed on a massive 6,500 square miles in the Sahara Desert
generating a massive amount of energy for the world.
Of course there are issues to be addressed. Firstly, cost – it is expected to cost US$550 billion, a price tag that will only bepossible through a consortium of companies. Secondly, constant maintenance and security will be needed due to the region’s instability and the need to make sure the panels are working at optimum levels.
