Solar windows
Solar Windows
The technology could especially benefit buildings in countries where sunlight is more prevalent than others, such as in the UAE where Dubai and Abu Dhabi have a host of skyscrapers requiring not just a lot of energy, but a plethora of windows.
Massive city skylines such as those in New York and London could be transformed into energy producing giants, instead of being renowned for their large energy consumption. The possibilities are endless, however in the past there has only been one thing holding the technology back – cost.
That is what Gratzel has changed. By creating a low cost solar cell that can be processed on a large scale, he has instantly made the technology more appealing to businesses and manufacturers. Consumers are always willing to reduce their energy costs, and these cells could provide the answer.
Currently Gratzel cells have been included in certain low-cost consumer products such as solar-backpacks, but only time will tell if the technology has the strength to go the distance. What is clear, is that Professor Gratzel now has £600,000 to further put into his research.
