The Sahara Desert - Desertec development
Desertec development
In order to get the most from the Desertec Initiative , concentrated solar power (CSP) is to be used. It is a system that would allow solar generators to be kept on at night, allowing for the production of electricity "on demand".
It is hoped that with CSP systems in place as well as combining it with other renewable sources such as wind turbines, the Desertec project, which would be located on 6500 square miles (17,000 km2) in the Sahara Desert,
would create a massive super grid of voltage.
The only question for Desertec energy is will the project be able to secure the financing needed to make the scheme a reality? Only time will tell but the project is rapidly gaining support around in Europe and the Middle East with governments and companies seeing the benefits.
However many feel that for the near future, Desertec will have to start out as a series of smaller solar farm in order to judge its success. Only when their benefits are seen, will the project expand to the size needed and initially planned.
The Desertec website is worth checking if you are interested in learning more about global energy and the possibilities for future wways of creating natural resources for the wworlds energy supplies.
